The Writing App Is Mightier Than The Sword

As a writer here at AppAdvice , I think it’s safe to say that I’ve gone through my fair share of plain text editor apps on both the iPhone and iPad. As Shawn Blanc said, “ You can’t throw a rock at the iTunes and Mac App Stores without hitting a minimalistic writing app .” Yes, there are a lot of options out there. But if you are going to do a lot of writing (be it essays, long articles, blog posts, stories, notes, etc.), then you need to find something that works for you. Personally, I’ve learned to ditch the heavy word processors (like Microsoft Word and Apple’s Pages) and just go plain text – this helps me focus on the actual writing, and not worry about other unnecessary fluff and UI elements (and sometimes the most important thing you want to focus on is getting the words out)

We’re Launching A Magazine, And We Want Your Help!

As many of you know, Apple is planning on releasing its Newsstand app this September as part of iOS’ radical system update to 5.0. Specifically tailored for digital periodicals, and with an in-built audience approaching 200 million users, Apple’s newest e-shop (iShop?) should prove a mammoth shot in the arm for established, underground, niche-specific, and indie newspapers and magazines everywhere. Naturally, we at AppAdvice intend to take full advantage of this unprecedented opportunity to bring you our newest project, AppAdvice Weekly Magazine . (And yes, that title is a placeholder for now.) Drastically different from the style and substance of our familiar website, AppAdvice Weekly Magazine has been developed to bridge the gaps between modern mobility, traditional industry trends, and the philosophical responsibilities of our hyper-connected future.

Nintendo’s Barely Treading Water, But Apple’s Got Extra Life Jackets

Though professionally concerned with Apple’s mobile offerings and general technological impact as a leading industrial stalwart, I happen to also be (to my undoubted financial detriment!) a considerable gadget fanatic and electronics collector. It is little surprise, then, that I love Nintendo’s wares nearly as much as my iDevice lineup. In fact, Nintendo’s original Game Boy was my first real introduction to the wonderful world of digital consumer entertainment; and, through the years, I’ve owned nearly every machine and first-party blockbuster the legendary outfit has released in the US market. Until just a couple of years ago, all indications were that Nintendo — though still managing small revolutions in the staid world of console gaming — was really padding its earnings with the brand’s overwhelming “portable” domination.
