If you’re a mountaineering iPhone owner, then we’ve got the perfect app for you: PeakFinder, the popular peak-finding application, has recently gained a USA West version of the app – meaning hikers living in this area can now use the app to discover the names of the mountains around them.
Previously, PeekFinder was only available in an Alps version. However, this new addition to the range opens up the application to a much wider audience.
Essentially, the app shows full panoramic views of its users’ surroundings, labelling each and every peak within the vicinity. It’s compatible with the iPhone (3G, 3GS, 4), iPod touch, and iPad. Additionally, on 3G-enabled devices, PeakFinder can use GPS to find your current location – making the app all the more easier to interact with. On iPhone 3GS and 4 devices, support for the integrated compass is also included.
The application comes with quite a few cool features that make it worth checking out. Aside from the vast amount of information on mountains and their peaks, PeakFinder also includes a pair of digital binoculars that allow users to zoom in on what they see in the app. This is a handy feature. Google Maps integration is also a given, meaning users can gain a wider view of the landscape around them using Google’s popular service.
With support for the USA West (including the Rocky Mountains, Coastal Ranges, and Sierra Nevada), and more than 30,000 peak names, there’s no doubt that PeakFinder is a very interesting app indeed. It’s currently priced at $1.99, and is available in the App Store now! And, if you do decide to check it out, let us know your experiences with PeakFinder in the comments box below.
