As expected, Apple finally got around to approve the Firefox Home syncing iPhone app last night and it’s now available for download on the App Store.
As a reminder, Firefox Home is an app that allows you to keep your bookmarks, history and open tabs synced between your desktop and your iDevice. It relies on Firefox’s Sync plugin, so you’re forced to use this browser to work. Yet, the feature might make it worth it for some of you.
I’ve been using it for a bit this morning, along with Firefox 4 beta 1 and it works as advertised. The app is iPhone only for now, but you can fullforce it on the iPad and it will look very well actually. Unfortunately, that seems to kill the “open in safari” or mail feature. About that, Firefox Home uses webkit to display the links you hit. The problem is that they haven’t put much effort into using it and you’re just getting a very basic webview. We know it’s not their engine, but from a company that makes an internet browser, we could expect a bit more of an effort I think.
Here is the app’s teaser, which they published at the app’s submission:
All in all, it’s not going to make me dump Safari. If a safari extension that works with it comes along however, I might keep it somewhere on my springboard.
