Nokia Vs AppleNokia has announced plans to sue smartphone rival Apple for patent infringment on technology used in its iPhone. Nokia believes it is due compensation, and has accused Apple of “trying to get a free ride on the back of Nokia’s innovation”.

Finnish firm Nokia states it has agreements with most handset manufacturers, allowing them to use their technology, but that Apple has not become part of this agreement.

Apple’s recent announced quarterly profits up 47% on the previous year, Nokia are struggling with profits down 20% over the same period. Some may alleged this legal action is a merely a smokescreen, and the real situation is that Nokia are on the run and grasping for any ammunition they can find to combat Apple’s recent dominance.

Nokia remain the world’s number one smartphone manufacturer, holding approximately 41% of the market as of January 2009. Apple’s market share is growing at between 3-7% each quarter, whilst Nokia’s is diminishing at a similar pace. If present trends continue, it is estimated Apple will have an equaled Nokia’s share of the smartphone market by early 2012.

Pepsi have launched their new Maxlist web application software, designed to capture the attention of the prime 18-25 year old demographic.
Designed by DDB Oslo, the Pepsi Maxlist web application combines YouTube videos with social interaction, helping users find relevant videos and to store them for later use, plus share these ‘maxlist’ type playlists with other users.
DDB Oslo, the company behind the Maxlist web application software, had this to say on their website (translated from Norwegian thanks to Google Translate):

“For PepsiCo Norway, DDB in cooperation with the production company Dallas Sthlm made a “web application tool”: Maxlist. The application is built around YouTube and to improve the experience of sharing, creating and watching video online.

The idea for Maxlist comes from the phenomenon partytubing, ie. when one uses a Web page with large amounts of video (eg.: Vimeo.com, youtube.com, break.com, etc.) as entertainment at a party. Maxlist can be used for so many things. Are you such as Liverpool fan you can easily create a Maxlist and send the five most magical moments in their history to a friend who is a Manchester United supporter. Do you have a view on the five greatest guitar solos in the world? Put them together in a Maxlist and send around to friends for discussion!
Maxlist is used today in the Norwegian and Danish market, but several countries are looking for the opportunity to make use of the application.”

The company has also produced a web application tutorial for ‘Maxlist’, showing how best to use it with ideas for building your own lists:

DDB Oslo mention that the web application could soon be released in other territories outside Scandinavia, but our thoughts are that it needs some more work first. Whilst the concept is sound there is other web application software out there that can do a similar job, and with YouTube itself able to make playlists is there any need for such an application?
